Kabuki-za Kinako Warabimochi - 歌舞伎座きな粉わらび餅
Nestled in a corner of the basement at Kabuki-za, you'll find a quaint little shop selling a popular Japanese sweet: Warabimochi.
Made from carefully selected ingredients, this delightful treat is a must-try for any Warabimochi lover.
A Peek Inside the Box
Inside the beautifully designed box with traditional style, are carefully packed ready-made ingredients. You will see a packet of warabimochi and a packet of kinako.
Soft, Fragrant and Addictive. What Is It Made Of?
Jiggly, jelly-like, and aromatic. Let's take a look at the magic behind this art.
The Warabimochi
Kabuki-za’s Warabimochis are extremely soft, well-kneaded, and fragrant.
The wooden fork or knife slides through easily, and the mochi melts in your mouth so easily that you’d find yourself eating non-stop.
Why? Kabukiza’s Warabimochi is made from real bracken flour, a rare and valuable ingredient primarily available in Nara.
The preparation of this bracken flour is meticulous, involving the collection of thin wild bracken roots from the mountains, which take 1-2 years to mature. This labor-intensive process yields a soft yet chewy consistency that is simply irresistible.
The Kinako Powder
The kinako powder has an extremely fragrant aroma that simply elevates the entire dish.
Unlike other kinako powders you can find in the market, this kinako is made from Tamba Black Soybean, known for its exceptional quality.
While black soybean is a highly valued commodity in Japan, Tamba black soybeans are said to be of the highest quality amongst all black soybeans.
Grown in the Kansai region, Tamba black soybeans are especially large and valued as lucky charms in Japan.
They are much harder to cultivate than regular black soybeans and can cost up to three times more.

Originally a Delicacy from Osaka Bashodo
This masterpiece was originally produced by Osaka Bashodo, a shop specializing only in Warabimochi.
With 150 years of history, Osaka Bashodo takes great pride in its selection of ingredients and has upheld traditional techniques since its founding.
Established in 1868, Osaka Bashodo continues to utilize the same traditional manufacturing methods, cooking the mochi in an open-fire kettle. This meticulous process results in Warabimochi that is soft, firm, and delicately sweet.
How Did It Reach Kabuki-za?
Recognizing its exceptional taste and rich history, professional food consultant Inoue-san brought Osaka Bashodo’s Warabimochi to the prestigious Kabukiza.
Having maintained Kabuki traditions since 1889, Kabuki-za is filled with audiences who very much appreciate the deep history and culture of Japan.
Inoue-san’s goal was to reach these people who appreciate Japanese food and culture, and to make this delicious Warabimochi more accessible to people with a love for this traditional dessert.
With Inoue-san’s great efforts, it is now an official product of Kabukiza, bearing the Kumadori-ya Ichimon logo, a trademark held by Kabuki-za service.
JX Collaboration: Connecting Warabimochi With Singapore
Inspired by Inoue-san’s dedication and passion, and impressed by the exceptional quality of Kabuki-za’s Warabimochi, the JX team decided to introduce this exquisite delicacy to Singapore through a trusted connection with the experienced food professional.
The Difference from Supermarket Warabimochi
Kabuki-za’s Warabimochi offers a distinctly superior taste compared to supermarket varieties in Japan.
Supermarket Warabimochi, priced at just SGD 1 per packet, reflects its cost with a slight almond flavor reminiscent of artificial cake cherries and overly sweet kinako powder that masks any genuine soybean taste.
While commercially available Warabimochi often use starches from sweet potato, tapioca, or kudzu, Kabuki-za’s Warabimochi uses authentic bracken flour - maintaining its traditional roots.
Real bracken flour, derived from the starch in bracken roots, is significantly more expensive—up to 35 times the cost of other starches in 2021—making it a rare and valuable ingredient.
Despite the high cost, Kabuki-za remains committed to authenticity, ensuring their Warabimochi delivers a flavor that truly impresses.
The distinct taste difference is primarily due to this dedication to using genuine bracken flour, resulting in a product that is both traditional and exceptional in quality.
