Because I Do Love That Mochi Texture.

Between crisp cookies, or inside a little white daifuku. Two mochi sweets with butter and cheese, for your next tea break.

Whenever I’m choosing something sweet, the word “mochi” tends to catch my attention.

Soft, chewy, with that gentle stretch when you take a bite. I’m sure I’m not the only one who loves that texture.

Lately, I’ve been seeing “MOCHI SWEETS” around town more often, too.

Japan has plenty of traditional mochi sweets, from daifuku and kashiwa mochi to Habutae Mochi. But there are also newer combinations with butter, cheese and chocolate, bringing a little of the pleasure of a Western dessert to a familiar Japanese sweet.

We’ve introduced a few of these at JX, and something we’ve heard a few times is:
“I’ve been curious about those, but they’re a little pricey.”

And I understand. Bringing carefully chosen products over from Japan does mean they can cost a little more.

THE MOCHI LOVERS’ BUNDLE, at a slightly gentler price.

◎First, Habutae Mochi in a Butter Cheese Sandwich.

Habutae Mochi is a traditional sweet from Fukui. Named after habutae, a fine silk fabric, it’s loved for its smooth, delicate softness.

Fukui-based cheese sweets specialist RUNNY CHEESE layers it with butter cream and sweet bean paste, then sandwiches it between cookies.

The mochi itself comes from Muranaka Kansendo, a local confectioner established in 1910.

First, the cookie gives a little crunch. Then comes the fluffy butter cream, followed by that soft, chewy mochi.

It’s the way those textures come together that makes this sandwich so enjoyable. At around 4cm thick, it looks quite substantial, but the butter cream is whipped with air, making it lighter than you might expect.

There are three flavours: red bean, strawberry and pistachio.

You could cut them into smaller pieces and try a little of each. Choosing a favourite can be part of the afternoon.

◎ And Inside That Little White Daifuku?

The other sweet is RUNNY CHEESE’s Pistachio & Cream Cheese Daifuku Mochi.

Cut the round, white daifuku in half, and you’ll find pistachio sweet bean paste, chocolate, and a generous piece of cream cheese right at the centre.

Soft, chewy mochi. The nuttiness of pistachio, the richness of chocolate, and a gentle tang from the cream cheese.

There’s still the familiar comfort of mochi and sweet bean paste. But with the cheese and chocolate, it feels a little like a Western dessert, too.

For the first one, do cut it in half before taking a bite.

There’s rather a lot tucked inside that little white daifuku.

◎ Put the Kettle On. Which Shall We Try First?

Both arrive frozen, so you can thaw just what you’d like for your tea break.

Make some coffee and try a little of each.
Or cut them in half and share with a friend who loves mochi as much as you do.

If that soft, chewy texture is something you love, I hope you’ll give these two a try.
