Is this really a tomato?

“Is this really a tomato?”
That’s often the first reaction people have when they taste a Japanese fruit tomato.
Known for their remarkable sweetness and rich flavor,
Japanese fruit tomatoes are grown with extraordinary care.

By carefully limiting water during cultivation, farmers encourage the tomatoes to concentrate their natural sugars and umami, creating a taste that is far more intense than that of an ordinary tomato.

While regular tomatoes typically have a sugar content (Brix) of around 4–6, fruit tomatoes are grown to reach 8 or higher. Some are even sweet enough to rival fresh fruit.

What makes them so memorable is the balance they achieve.
Their sweetness is bright and clean, complemented by a gentle acidity that keeps every bite refreshing.
The flesh is firm yet juicy, with a rich aroma and depth of flavor that lingers on the palate.

The best way to enjoy them is often the simplest: on their own.
Chilling them before serving brings out an even brighter, fruit-like sweetness.
They are also delicious paired with fresh mozzarella in a classic Caprese salad,or simply sliced in half and sprinkled with a pinch of salt to enhance their natural umami.

Close your eyes and take a bite, and you might not immediately think, “tomato.”
With the sweetness of fruit and the depth of flavor only a tomato can offer,
Japanese fruit tomatoes are a uniquely Japanese delicacy,
proof that even the simplest ingredients can become something extraordinary.
What Makes Japanese Fruit Tomatoes Special?
1. Exceptionally Sweet & Flavorful
- Unlike regular tomatoes, Japanese fruit tomatoes have a higher natural sugar content, often exceeding Brix 8-10.
- Their perfect balance of sweetness and acidity enhances their natural umami, making each bite a burst of flavor.

2. Carefully Cultivated for Perfection
- Farmers limit water intake, causing the tomatoes to concentrate their sugars and flavors while maintaining a firm, juicy texture.
- Each tomato is grown under precise temperature and soil conditions, ensuring consistency in quality and taste.

3. Firm, Juicy, and Aromatic
- Unlike watery, bland tomatoes, these have a rich, dense flesh that is both firm yet bursting with juice.
- Their fragrant aroma enhances their gourmet appeal, making them ideal for fresh eating or premium culinary dishes.
4. Packed with Nutrients & Umami
- Rich in lycopene, antioxidants, and vitamins, fruit tomatoes are not just delicious but also incredibly nutritious.
- Their high umami content makes them a versatile ingredient in salads, pastas, and even desserts.
Twice the sweetness of normal tomatoes
For a tomato to be called a Fruit Tomato, its sugar content must be 8 degrees or more. Comparing to a regular tomato, which has only 4 to 6 degrees of sweetness.

You can consider fruit tomato to be two times sweeter than regular tomatoes, and in fact, its sweetness degree is comparable to other Japanese fruits!
